Biography

Faith47 (born Faith XLVII in 1979 in Cape Town, South Africa) is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist who began working in graffiti in 1997, three years after the end of apartheid. Working in spray paint, oil, graphite and photography, she adapts her practice to each surface — weathered city walls, salvaged objects, studio canvas — in an approach where the substrate dictates the medium.

Her work crosses themes of social justice, spirituality and the environment, with particular attention to female figures and the broken promises of post-apartheid South Africa. She has painted in more than 50 cities worldwide since 2006, moving between street art and gallery spaces while maintaining a public practice. In 2023, she inaugurated her first museum exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts of Nancy (CLAIR OBSCUR).

Her monumental murals explore what she calls "the commonplace as holy": miners awaiting justice, ghostly rhinoceroses evoking poaching, medicinal flowers emerging from Beirut's concrete. She has lived nomadically since 2020 after being based in Los Angeles.
