Biography
DALeast (born 1984 in Wuhan, China) is a multidisciplinary artist who began working in public space in 2004 within China's nascent graffiti scene. A founding member of the Wuhan-based collective Chirp — one of the first groups in China to merge public art and graffiti — he developed a visual language rooted in fragmentation: each piece is composed of thousands of painted shards simulating metallic splinters that assemble into animal or human silhouettes.
His practice explores tension between opposites — natural and artificial, organic and synthetic — seeking a coalescence between seemingly irreconcilable worlds. Working across sculpture, installation, drawing and mural painting, he has created works on six continents in cities including Shanghai, New York, Paris, Berlin and Cape Town.
Disillusioned with his conservative fine arts training in China, he joined a graffiti crew and spent six months travelling the world to paint, eventually settling in Cape Town, South Africa with his wife, artist Faith47. He has exhibited in galleries in San Francisco and New York, and his large-scale murals are regularly documented by street art media worldwide.
