Manik Raj Nakra

Manik Raj Nakra

Biography

Manik Raj Nakra, born in 1982 in Olympia, Washington and based in Austin, is a multidisciplinary artist working across painting, drawing, woodblock printing, collage and ceramic stucco. A 2004 BA graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, he has built a twenty-year practice drawing on traditional Indian iconography, Mughal painting, colonial relics and ancient mythologies.

His work deploys a saturated palette and a graphic vocabulary inspired by ancient architectures — Roman, Mughal, Hindu — to stage scenes in which humans, deities and animals interact on equal footing. Through these narratives, the artist probes notions of power, ritual, desire and transformation, and builds monumental murals that read like contemporary fables.

In 2023 he became the fourth artist commissioned to paint the façade of The Contemporary Austin — Jones Center, following Deborah Roberts, Daniel Johnston and Jenny Holzer. His pieces have been shown across Texas and in San Francisco, and his commercial work includes collaborations with Converse, The Oxford American, The LINE Hotel, Facebook and Urban Outfitters.
