Biography
PREF is a British artist specialising in large-scale typographic murals. Trained in graphic design, he has been developing since 2010 a visual language built on the interlacing and overlapping of letterforms: brightly coloured block shapes that twist, curve and intersect to create three-dimensional optical illusions. Deciphering the hidden word within the composition becomes a participatory experience for the viewer.
His work explores tensions between legibility and abstraction: by making letters unrecognisable at first glance, he pushes the eye to look for meaning where it least expects it. He co-founded the collective Typograffic Circle with fellow artist Gary Stranger, bringing together creators working in the field of urban typography.
He works regularly in Belgium, France and the United States, with murals in cities such as Liège, Ostend, Bayonne and Sand City, California. His personal website is prefprefpref.com.
