Biography
Kenneth Lavallee is a Métis artist based in Winnipeg whose practice moves between sculpture, mural, animation and object design. His approach translates a primarily two-dimensional language into experiences that occupy physical space, drawing on both the Indigenous knowledge of his lineage and Western visual traditions.
Since 2016 he has led, with Synonym Art Consultation and Graffiti Art Programming, the Star Blanket Project, a cornerstone of Winnipeg's Wall-to-Wall festival. The project transposes onto city walls the motif of the ceremonial star blanket, honoring the memory of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit people (MMIWG2S).
In 2018 he led, with Cree-Saulteaux artist Annie Beach, the wrapping of the Helen Betty Osborne Building at the University of Winnipeg in a giant star-studded mural, in tribute to the Cree student murdered in 1971 in The Pas, for whom the building is named. The piece has become one of the most photographed memorial murals in Manitoba.
