Biography
Rhian Kempadoo-Millar is a British artist and costume designer based in Leeds, deeply rooted in the culture of the Leeds West Indian Carnival. An award-winning costume maker, she works at the intersection of mural painting, scenography and carnival costume, drawing on Caribbean traditions of "ole mas", masqueraders and moko jumbies.
From the 2020s onwards her painting practice has extended into the street with a participatory approach: school workshops, consultations with elders from Chapeltown's African-Caribbean community and collaborations with carnival seamstresses. Her murals combine saturated palettes, figures in movement and textile patterns borrowed from costumes.
She works regularly with East Street Arts and the Leeds West Indian Carnival Committee, translating their heritage into the urban fabric of Chapeltown, the historic heart of Leeds' Caribbean community.
