Biography

Kelsey Montague, born in 1985 in Colorado, is an American illustrator and muralist best known for her interactive murals that invite passersby to step into the image for a photograph. After studying art, design and media at Richmond American International University in London, where she graduated summa cum laude, she lived in Florence, New York and Los Angeles before settling in Nashville.

Her signature is a pair of monumental, lace-like wings, which she has painted since 2014 in more than fifty installations across ten countries — from Australia and Argentina to Ireland and Mauritius. The artist traces the motif back to her grandfather, a painter who hid birds in his canvases, and has turned it into the vehicle of the #WhatLiftsYou movement, inviting everyone to name what lifts them up.

Her works have been shared by Taylor Swift, Kendall Jenner, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts and Bono, and her Gulch mural in Nashville remains one of the most photographed images of the city. In 2024 she unveiled a new public commission on the façade of the Motif on Music Row, woven around the iconography of Music Row.
