Biography
Jamar D. Pierre, born in New Orleans and raised between the Seventh Ward and Gentilly, is a painter, muralist and arts educator with more than thirty years of practice. Introduced to graffiti in the 1980s, he was redirected as a teenager by a teacher toward Jerome Smith and his organization Tambourine and Fan, devoted to cultural awareness among the youth of Treme, before spending fifteen years with the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission as a mentor and artist in residence.
His work has been shown at the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and Longue Vue House and Gardens, as well as in residencies in Iceland, Costa Rica and Canada. His commissions include the Essence Music Festival, Beyoncé and HBO's 'Treme.' In 2018 he was selected as the city's official tricentennial artist, and his painting 'Resilience' entered the Library of Congress collections — work praised by NPR and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Institute.
Founder of New Orleans International Muralist (NOIM), he has led since 2018 the Tchoupitoulas Art Corridor, a monumental project aiming to cover more than a mile of the Tchoupitoulas Street floodwall with historical murals tracing three centuries of New Orleans history, while training a new generation of muralists through a paid mentorship program.
