Biography
Thomas Evans, known as Detour, is a multidisciplinary artist based in Denver, Colorado. He moved to the city in 2006 to attend the University of Colorado Denver, where he earned a master's degree in business before going full-time as an artist in 2014.
A painter, muralist, sculptor, amateur engineer and educator, he has built an approach that blends contemporary art with community grounding, producing monumental portraits made of saturated color fields and abstract planes that still read as recognizable forms. His landmark works include the Denver Nuggets mural on Colfax Avenue painted during the team's NBA championship run, the Nikola Jokić portrait in Five Points, a George Floyd tribute, a Broncos Hall of Famers piece at Mile High Stadium and the largest ground mural of the Denver Walls festival, installed on the Source Hotel parking lot.
With more than 100,000 followers on Instagram and coverage in the New York Times, he is a regular name on public commissions — from Denver International Airport, where he is preparing the installation 'It's Not What You Bring Back,' to national initiatives such as Absolute Equality, for which he painted the 2024 Juneteenth mural in the RiNo Art District.
