Biography
Damon Smyth is an illustrator and muralist from the Portland, Oregon area. Trained in comics, he first made a name for himself as an illustrator of historical graphic novels, notably 'The Life of Frederick Douglass' — a graphic adaptation of the abolitionist leader's autobiography co-authored with writer David F. Walker and colorist Marissa Louise — and 'History Smashers: The Underground Railroad.'
His move from comics to mural work is rooted in a narrative approach: each wall is treated as an expanded comic panel in which the detail of a face, a posture or a ray of light carries a story. The artist works primarily with spray paint, favoring figurative compositions in warm tones that depict anonymous human figures caught in moments of empathy, silence or transmission.
Since 2020, he has been developing public commissions across Oregon in partnership with the Portland Street Art Alliance and the city's Public Environment Management Office. His murals aim to strengthen local fabric through positive images that speak beyond communities and tackle universal themes — kindness, grief, resilience.
