Christopher Burch

Biography

Christopher Burch, born in 1979 and known by the alias Goya_Goon, is an American multidisciplinary artist splitting his life between San Francisco and St. Louis, Missouri. Trained at Columbia College (BFA 2002) and the San Francisco Art Institute, where he earned an MFA in painting in 2008 on a fellowship, he has built a practice that blends painting, drawing, sculpture, music and monumental murals.

His work belongs to the Afrosurrealist movement and draws on mythology, folklore and history to reinvent the codes of the grotesque and the absurd. A founding member of the Screwed Arts Collective, he has also taught in California and Missouri at institutions such as the Regional Arts Commission, the Center of Creative Arts and the East Oakland School for the Arts.

A muralist for more than thirteen years, he unveiled his first large mural in San Francisco's Mission District in April 2024, on the façade of the Dance Mission Theatre, cementing his place in the Bay Area street art scene. His pieces celebrate Black beauty and probe the troubling edges of the human experience.
