Biography
Wongi 'Freak' Wilson is a professional street artist and muralist born and raised in Sydenham, Christchurch, New Zealand. After completing a Certificate in Design at the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology in 2009, he developed his artistic practice combining graffiti and large-scale muralism, becoming one of the most recognised figures in the city's urban art scene.
Wilson is known for his photorealistic airbrush murals, often of monumental scale, which adorn many facades throughout central Christchurch. He is a founding member of the DTR Crew collective, alongside Dcypher, Ikarus and Jacob Yikes, with whom he has created some of the city's most ambitious mural works.
Since the 2011 earthquake, Wilson has played a central role in Christchurch's artistic renaissance. His works have been exhibited at Canterbury Museum and the COCA Gallery. He has also participated in the FLARE Street Art Festival and completed commissions for Kathmandu, Rollickin' Gelato and other New Zealand brands.
