Biography
Andrej Josifovski, known by the pseudonym Pijanista ("the Pianist"), is a Serbian artist and architect based in Belgrade. After training in piano, he earned an architecture degree and is pursuing a doctorate at the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade, where he also works as an assistant professor. It is on the walls of his hometown that he began developing a muralist practice combining cultural references, social satire and technical mastery.
His work is characterised by large-scale figurative compositions often inspired by literature, sport or Serbian heritage. He has created portraits of overlooked figures, such as Jelisaveta Načić, Serbia's first female architect, and narrative murals like "Ja sam Akiko," a 400 m² work painted in Dorćol in 2019. In 2018, he represented Serbia as a collaborator on a project shown at the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale.
As founder of the Runaway festival, he organises annual mural interventions in the Bežanijska Kosa and Lower Dorćol neighbourhoods, inviting artists from Serbia and around the world to transform Belgrade's facades into an open-air museum. He advocates for an anti-kitsch approach captured in his hashtag #usracuse, championing authentic expression rooted in place and community.
