Biography
Owen Dippie was born in Kawerau, a small town in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty, in a community shaped by strong cultural identities. From an early age he developed a deep interest in portraiture and in capturing figures with distinctive character. After beginning to paint on New Zealand's streets, he quickly gained recognition for his large-scale realist works blending Māori culture with popular imagery.
Over more than a decade, Owen Dippie has created monumental portraits across New Zealand and New York. In 2015, he held his first solo exhibition in the United States and produced his first mural in downtown Los Angeles. That same year, The Huffington Post named one of his New York works the year's best mural. He has collaborated with artists including Al Diaz (SAMO) to pay tribute to Jean-Michel Basquiat.
His practice is grounded in a personal commitment to Māori culture — particularly tā moko and traditional tattooing — as well as social causes including mental health awareness and breast cancer research. Together with his wife Erin, he has run galleries in Mount Maunganui and on K Road in Auckland. He is represented by NINETEEN gallery.
