Biography
Tei Mensah Huagie, born March 21, 1973 in Accra, is a Ghanaian artist whose practice spans sculpture, painting, textile design, and jewelry making. He trained at Ghanatta College of Arts and Design from 1991 to 1994, then apprenticed under two major figures in Ghanaian art: Amon Kotei, designer of Ghana's national coat of arms, and Sowatey Adjei — formative experiences that shaped his distinctive visual language.
His artistic signature lies in transforming reclaimed aluminium sheets — some dating back to Ghana's colonial era — into large-scale compositions assembled through copper wire stitching. This singular technique, at the intersection of sculpture, textile, and found-material art, produces colourful, textured surfaces featuring geometric shapes, human silhouettes, and abstract motifs. His work has been exhibited at the Royal Ontario Museum (Canada), in South Africa, and in several galleries across Accra.
In 2020, he created the monumental installation 'National Inspiration' across 80 linear metres at Accra's Ako Adjei Interchange, commissioned by the Creative Art Council of Ghana through the Chale Wote festival. The work, conceived to inspire passers-by to pursue their dreams, has become one of the defining visual landmarks of central Accra.
