Biography
Parisurteil is a calligrapher based in Berlin. He came to calligraphy in 2015 and has not stopped writing since, pushing the discipline out of its original format very quickly: since writing is by nature scalable, it moved from paper to walls within months.
His work lives on that gap. On one side, strokes of scribal exactness on handmade rag paper, with a nib, in strict observance of proportions inherited from tradition. On the other, letters thrown across surfaces several metres wide, where the paint runs, bleeds and overflows without any attempt to hold it back. The same gesture, performed twice at opposite speeds.
The pseudonym refers to the Judgement of Paris, the episode in which the Trojan prince has to name the most beautiful of the goddesses: an impossible choice, set out as a programme. His walls can be seen in Berlin and at several European festivals, and he regularly runs calligraphy sessions open to the public.
