Biography
Zigom began installing mosaics in early 2021, during the pandemic restrictions, with no formal artistic training. The pseudonym nods to Gizmo, the creature from the film Gremlins, which already signals the territory: the popular culture of the 1980s and 1990s, the cartoons and films watched on television.
The repertoire is explicit: Captain Harlock, Grendizer, Kermit the Frog, a reference to The Big Lebowski, and the two helmets of the duo Daft Punk overlapping inside a black disc. Each piece is assembled from tiles in pixel art fashion, a technique that suits cartoon imagery particularly well, since it was already conceived in flat colour and hard outlines.
The playing field has stayed tight: most of the work sits in the fourth arrondissement of Paris, in the heart of the Marais, the district with the highest concentration of urban mosaics in the capital, with a few pieces out in Les Lilas, in Seine-Saint-Denis. This work of quotation plays less on provocation than on recognition: passers-by identify the image before noticing the technique.
