Biography

Fabien Hupin, who paints as Nean, is a Brussels artist born in 1991. Self-taught, he began with drawing on paper before moving to graffiti and then to large-format murals.

He claims influences that do not come from urban art: Klimt, Egon Schiele, Toulouse-Lautrec, and poster artists such as Mucha. It shows in his handling of light and atmosphere, closer to painting than to lettering, and in work that moves between experiment and photorealism. His walls stage people and natural elements in what he calls the suspended moment, an arrested scene inviting the viewer to stop as well.

The city of Ghent commissioned a permanent work from him on the fight against domestic violence, a commission that says much about the standing this kind of painting has acquired in Belgium. He is also a founding member of the Kingdom crew.
