Biography

Udane Juaristi, who paints as Udatxo, was born in Azkoitia, Gipuzkoa, in 1985 and studied fine arts at the University of the Basque Country in Bilbao before a stay at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris. Her paintings and collages focus on city life and everyday scenes, and that urban subject matter eventually carried her work onto walls in Spain, France, Germany and Morocco. She was awarded an accessit at the Francisco Pradilla painting competition in Zaragoza in 2018. That same year the Points de Vue festival invited her to Bayonne, where she painted the stairwell of the Café du Théâtre. In March 2019, during a residency with Spacejunk in Mauléon-Licharre, she covered the wall of the Maule-Baïtha cinema with a tribute to the espadrille makers of Mauléon and of her hometown, based on an old photograph of women braiding soles in the street.
