Biography
Born in Baltimore in 1969 to Ukrainian immigrant parents, Hayuk trained at the Massachusetts College of Art, the University of Odessa and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture before moving to San Francisco in 1991 and then to Brooklyn in 2002, where she keeps an independent studio. Her large outdoor walls are built from dense geometric patterns in saturated colour, drawing on punk rock, mandalas, holograms and the painted Easter eggs of Ukrainian folk tradition. Alongside murals she sculpts, photographs, films and curates, and she has been part of the Barnstormers collective since 2002. Musicians including M.I.A., TV on the Radio, The Flaming Lips, Animal Collective and the Beastie Boys have used her work for album covers, posters and stage sets. For the 2023 edition of Points de Vue in Bayonne, Maya Hayuk painted a wall on rue du Chanoine-Daranatz named after the tryzub, the trident of the Ukrainian coat of arms.
