Biography

Moses & Taps is a German collective formed in 2007, when two writers who had each been painting since 1994 decided to work together. Their first joint project set the tone: one thousand trains painted in one thousand days, each signing with the other's name. The book documenting it, International Topsprayer, became one of the most widely read graffiti publications.

The duo works under several identities, TOPSPRAYER or ERNI & BERT, to protect its anonymity, and treats the rail network as a laboratory. In 2010 a hyperrealistic replica of a train door travelled several trips without being spotted; in 2015 an entirely walled-up S-Bahn train crossed Hamburg under the title The Wall.

The collective has since moved into museums without giving up the trains: Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei in 2014, the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn in 2015, Musée Regards de Provence in Marseille in 2020. In Europe it is credited as one of the initiators of post-graffiti, the shift of a train vocabulary onto other surfaces.
