Biography
Saman and Sasan Oskouei, born in 1985 and 1991 in Tabriz, are Iranian brothers who have been based in Brooklyn since 2012. They started out pasting and stencilling in the streets of a country where unauthorised public art can bring prosecution.
Their work is political without being wordy: borders and refugees, capitalism and inequality, women's rights, the environment. The techniques vary widely, from wall stencils to sculpture, performance and video, but the medium stays secondary, in the service of the message.
In March 2015 the brothers painted the facade of the Urban Nation building in Berlin: a portrait of a young woman holding, inside her silhouette, the Berlin crowd on the night the Wall came down. It was their largest stencil at the time, cut into 176 pieces in Brooklyn before being sprayed on site over five days.
