Biography
Born Sandra Fabara in Ecuador in 1964, she grew up in Queens and started writing on New York walls in 1979, at fifteen. Between 1979 and 1985 she painted subway cars, the only girl holding her own against the boys in a subculture that counted almost no women.
Her role in the 1982 film Wild Style carried her name beyond graffiti and made her a figure of the emerging hip-hop culture. She was showing in galleries while still in high school, and had her first solo exhibition at Moore College of Art at twenty-one. Her canvases later entered the collections of the Whitney Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and MoMA.
She still paints walls and passes on forty years of practice through mural workshops and university lectures. In September 2024 she covered the facade of the Urban Nation museum in Berlin with an imaginary cityscape mixing Berlin and New York motifs.
