Biography

Maoro
Maoro Frascotti was born in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1957. He is the son of Giovanni, who owned a house-painting business, and Albina, a seamstress.

He learned to draw and enrolled at the School of Applied Arts with the support of the painter and sculptor Louis Ducommun. In 1979, he obtained the Swiss Federal Certificate of Competence as a steel engraver.

Moving away from this first profession, he quickly turned to other forms of expression, all connected with the graphic arts. Over the course of a decade, he learned the art of comic-book illustration, producing several albums along the way, and regularly exhibited the original artwork.

A number of journeys, particularly to Africa, also enabled him to experiment with a more pictorial style. It was in Egypt— in Luxor and Cairo— that he exhibited his first paintings.

He travelled to several countries and was awarded a study grant from the Swiss Cities Conference for a residency in Cairo, as well as a grant from Pro Helvetia and a Visarte grant for a residency at the Cité des Arts in Paris.

These stays enabled him to develop one of his favourite subjects: the rooftops of Paris.

Decorative painting holds a special significance for him. His grandfather was a decorative painter. He came to Switzerland to escape a war-torn Italy and eventually settled there permanently. A few churches still bear witness to his work—the only link connecting Maoro to a grandfather he never knew. Whenever he paints a wall, he always gives a little thought to him.
