Biography
Zebu is a Berlin duo formed in 2015 by Lynn Lehmann and Dennis Gärtner, both of whom graduated in 2017 with master's degrees from the city's art schools, the Kunsthochschule Weissensee for one, the Universität der Künste for the other. They grew up in Berlin graffiti culture and have never left the wall behind.
Their visual language is recognisable by its massive compositions and saturated colour, moving constantly between the figurative and the abstract: solid forms, mechanical or geometric characters, assembled volumes that owe as much to object drawing as to decoration.
The duo works indifferently across illustration, graphic design and painting, and carries its images into handmade screenprints, zines and a book. The reason they give for that circulation is explicit: to take art out of its reserved spaces and put it where everyone passes, without the barrier that usually separates the art world from the people looking at it.
