Biography
Riccardo Attanasio, who signs as Matlakas, is a Neapolitan artist trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples and then at Oxford, where he took a master's degree in social sculpture at Brookes University. That last course explains the rest: in his hands, a work is made with people as much as with materials.
He moves from performance to painting, from sculpture to dance, without ranking these practices. His work has been shown at the Moscow Biennale in 2010, in the emerging artists section, at the Gwangju Biennale in 2014 and at the Prague Quadrennial, and is held in the collections of the Odessa art museum and the Museum of Palestine in Cape Town.
His Aielli mural, painted in 2019 in the centre of the Abruzzese village, illustrates his method exactly: he stayed long enough to know the streets, the faces and the stories, and every symbol on the wall comes from a conversation or an encounter with a resident. The result can only be read in full on the spot.
