Biography
Born in Busan in the 1980s, GR1 (지알원) started painting in the street in 2000 and now lives in Seoul, working across several Korean cities. His 'GR1 was here' stickers long served as a trail for anyone hunting down his pieces.
His street work sits between wild style and portraiture, almost always in black and white, with faces built from thousands of small strokes. That practice carried on into the studio and the gallery, alongside collaborations with Nike, Adidas and Samsung C&T.
The artist received the Chongkundang art prize in 2025 and a Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture grant in 2023; his work entered the collections of the MMCA Artbank in Gwacheon and the OCI Museum in Seoul, which gave him the solo show 'Grrr!'. He has taught Western painting at Chungbuk National University since 2022.
