Biography
Born in Zurich in 1939, Harald Naegeli started spraying single line figures on the walls of his city at night in September 1977. Close to nine hundred of them appeared in under two years, and the press named him the Sprayer of Zurich.
Arrested in June 1979, he was sentenced in absentia to nine months in prison and a fine of 206,000 francs, confirmed by the Federal Supreme Court in November 1981. He fled to Germany, met Joseph Beuys there and covered Cologne with six hundred drawings, the Kölner Totentanz, before being arrested at Puttgarden in 1983 and turning himself in at the border in April 1984.
His practice then moved away from the wall: he developed Partikelzeichnungen, built from thousands of minute dots and strokes, and taught at the Thomas Morus academy in Cologne from 1998. The figures that survive in his home city are now protected as artworks.
