Biography
Born in 1976 in Tbilisi, Dato Machavariani, known as Kakadu, graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. During his student years he played drums alongside Irakli Charkviani, in one of the defining bands of independent Georgia.
Since 1997 he has published comics and illustrations in Georgian magazines and newspapers, deliberately sticking to paper, pencil and ink rather than digital tools. His long collaboration with Sulakauri Publishing produced the 2011 illustrated edition of The Knight in the Panther's Skin, Shota Rustaveli's medieval poem, followed in 2019 by a graphic novel drawn from the same text, still his major work to date.
The illustrator also works in theatre, cinema and motion design, and made the opening imagery for the Abesalom and Eteri opera. In 2022 the Tbilisi Mural Fest moved one of his drawings onto a gable wall in the Mtatsminda district, where muralist Irakli Kadeishvili, known as Kade 90, transferred the composition to brick.
