Mick La Rock

Mick La Rock is the name Dutch artist Aileen Middel has painted under since 1983, when she started writing MICKEY in her home town of Groningen. One of the first women to make her mark on European graffiti, she joined the New York scene in the 1990s and painted alongside Blade, Quik and Lady Pink. Her recent work leaves readable letterforms behind for a geometric abstraction of circles, bars and continuous lines, drawn from modernist painting and brutalist architecture. Her murals stand in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Helsinki, Prague, Miami and Hong Kong, and in Düsseldorf with Composition in CMYK, painted for the 40° Urban Art festival in 2021. In 2015 she was guest curator of Graffiti. New York meets The Dam at the Amsterdam Museum.
