Biography
Lucy McLauchlan, born in England in 1977, is a British artist based in Birmingham and co-founder of the Beat13 collective alongside Matthew Watkins. She paints monumental murals almost entirely in black and white, working with marker pens and Indian ink to build a vocabulary of organic forms, radiating patterns, faces and birds drawn from Art Deco and psychedelia. Her practice is site-responsive: the wall dictates the composition, whether it is a multi-storey building, an Italian water tower, a Norwegian lighthouse or a disused New York subway tunnel. In 2010 she painted three giant birds across the facade of Birmingham Central Library, one of her best-known interventions. Her work is held in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, and the Urban Nation museum in Berlin.
