Caroline Sury

Caroline Sury, born in 1964 in Laval, is a French comics author, painter, illustrator and publisher based in Marseille. A graduate of the Bordeaux school of fine arts in 1989, she co-founded and co-directed the Marseille publishing house Le Dernier Cri from 1993 to 2009 with Pakito Bolino, a landmark of screen printing and underground publishing. Her world, drawn in Indian ink, is autobiographical and deceptively childlike, close to art brut: grimacing figures, misshapen bodies, black humour. She published Bébé 2000 (2006) and Cou Tordu (2010) with L'Association, illustrated for Libération, Le Monde and La Provence, has developed paper sculpture work since 2009, and sang in the hardcore band RWA. Her collective studio La Gangue is on Rue Saint-Savournin, whose facade carries one of her murals.
