Biography
A self-taught artist from Sanary-sur-Mer, Manyoly took up mural painting in 2013 in the narrow streets of Marseille's Panier district. A long stay in South-East Asia, where she photographed the faces she met along the way, set her direction: portraiture, and women's faces above all. She rebuilds those faces from open shapes and vivid colour, a long way from realism, with a frontal and often unfocused gaze; she describes her work as painting emotions rather than likenesses. Before taking to the street she had run a gallery for six years, having opened it at seventeen. Her female figures now appear on walls in Marseille as well as London, Berlin, Lisbon and New York.
