Biography
Yves Chaland (Lyon, 1957 - Nérac, 1990) was a French cartoonist and a leading figure of the 1980s "ligne claire" revival. Steeped in 1950s Franco-Belgian comics, he replayed their codes with melancholy irony in Freddy Lombard, Bob Fish and above all Le Jeune Albert, an acid chronicle of a Brussels street kid. Killed in a car crash at thirty-two, he left a short but highly influential body of work. His mural on rue des Alexiens, painted in 2000, recreates a 1950s Brussels street complete with tram and the Métropole cinema.
