Biography
Peyo, real name Pierre Culliford (Brussels, 1928 - 1992), is one of the pillars of Belgian comics. He created Johan and Peewit in 1952, from which The Smurfs emerged in 1958 to become a worldwide phenomenon, then Benoît Brisefer in 1960, the child with herculean strength who loses it the moment he catches a cold. His round, legible line, in the Marcinelle school tradition, shaped several generations. In Brussels, the mural on rue Haute shows Benoît Brisefer rising into the sky holding a balloon.
