Biography

André Geerts (Brussels, 1955 - 2010) was a Belgian comics author best known for Jojo, the gentle series he created in 1983 for Spirou magazine. It follows a boy raised by his grandmother, Mémé, in a working-class Brussels drawn directly from the Marolles district. Geerts cultivated a soft humour and a keen eye for childhood, far from the action series of his day. His mural on rue Pieremans, painted in 1996, opens a window onto Mémé's living room, red-and-yellow tiles and a dog asleep in its basket.
