Biography
Manel Alma is a Portuguese visual artist based in Cacilhas, on the south bank of the Tagus, where he runs the Alma Factory studio. He trained in communication design at IADE in Lisbon and grew up in a studio environment: his mother, Cidália Rodrigues, is an artist herself.
His painting is recognisable first by its palette, unhesitating and unexpected in its combinations. The other constant is relief: he works the third dimension, through volumes, cast shadows or the supports themselves, so that his pieces do not read the same way depending on where you stand.
His walls can be seen in Almada, a town that has built an urban art trail across its territory and now counts among the hubs of the Portuguese scene, minutes from Lisbon across the river. He also exhibits studio work and practises illustration.
