Biography

Dejan Ivanović has signed his walls as Wuper Kec since 2007. A graduate of the Belgrade Polytechnic School, he came up through graffiti and tagging in Serbian streets, then gradually set the spray can aside for the brush and moved toward figurative mural painting.

The work centres on ordinary people caught in their everyday surroundings: growers, pensioners, children, family scenes. The handling is realistic and close to oil painting, with an acknowledged debt to Soviet-era canvases. Since 2016 the artist has devoted part of his practice to studio painting, producing around thirteen canvases and eight murals a year.

Festival invitations have taken him across Europe and to Russia, with walls in Mostar, in Ekaterinburg for Stenograffia, in Obrenovac and in Mons, where his Saint-Symphorien mural pays tribute to the village's chicory growers. His murals often draw on the memory of the place that hosts them, borrowing the framing and the light of a family photograph.
